Back once more to the days when man was the machine, part of it. This short film was by Western Electric, who made telephone and telegraph equipment. This film showcases switchboards, repeater stations, underground cable, the uses for the teledyne, telegraph, and in all, a bulky, unwieldy array of equipment meant to transfer your voice across town or country.
What interested me most about this film wasn’t just how thorough and plain this was all presented, and though I love seeing analog equipment in use that wasn’t what caught my eye. It was the date of production: 1941.
This is a monument to the American ideal of “no one would dare attack us on our own soil!”. This film carefully graphs out main cable routes, what the “typical” repeater station looks like, even gives a sample of the US Signal Corp’s code along with a look inside the FBI – just about everything an enemy would want to know if it was out to sever communications across the US.
That would all change in a year, however.
The music is another Space Connection offering, “Karma Karma (Zap Zap)”. This gives a clear show of the band’s major influences, Kansas and the Urantia Chronicles, and features a heavy, rolling rhythm that just keeps going.
A song about what you destroy will come back upon you, and what you neglect or forget – that will come back too. Written in the Sinful Seventies, it’s an interesting statement of what was and what would come.
