I quit my job… any advice and support on new life decision?

By · April 11, 2011 · Filed in Past Life Contracts · 3 Comments »

I’ve recently made a drastic life decision over the past week and would like to see others’ views on it; hopefully find someone who agrees with me and tells me to embrace it. I know what I’m doing is a great opportunity in disguise as I will never get another chance like it. I would also like some advice on how to get the most out of it. I know this isn’t a discussion corner, but if you feel like it, please chip in, and kindly. Although I should expect some humorous or insulting replies, this is Yahoo Answers after all. :)

Firstly, I’m 28, male, have no girlfriend, wife or kids! I quit my job because I feel connected to no one there, feel manipulated and used; have a highly irritating boss who zaps a lot of my energy, I don’t like talking to him, but he talks a lot and dramatises everything; I am unhappy there and can’t be myself. It feels like captivity. I have been there for a year and three months, have given it 110%, received two promotions, nothing swanky or well paid, but I have learnt a lot and have some new job experience. In a year and a half I will move to London to pursue my ambition of being an author of young children’s literature and screenwriter. I have finished my three month probation of my latest promotion, but decided not to sign a permanent contract and to leave instead.

Last week all my thoughts and frustrations came to ahead, and I made a decision to leave my current job. I have enough money to support me for the next 6 months, if I were to stay unemployed. Although I would like a job before then, but do understand that it’s not a case of "when I want it, but when something is available." But I want "change," I want a new challenge. I do love working, I want to learn new skills, I want new experience, I want to commit to a company, but I have a burning ambition to be a writer and feel like taking the next 3-6 months off from work to write full-time is a great opportunity, and one that I should take up with both hands, and feet! At the same time, I can learn to budget what I spend and make it last. As of the last year or so, I have been wasting £200+ on unnecessary online spending and need to learn the real value of money and spend it wisely. With having to budget for every single penny I spend will allow me to be more responsible with my money and set a course and mindset for any future earnings.

I know this opportunity will never be available again to me once I run out of money and return to work full-time, and certainly when I move to London. So I think I will make the most of it, but I have no one in my life to talk to about it and thought you guys might give me a little confidence boost and some advice. I am currently looking into volunteer work at the local hospital and charity shops for some odd hours in the evening or at weekends during my unemployment period. Volunteering is something that I’ve always wanted to do, and I’m finally getting around to doing it. As well as registering as a Blood donor. I’m getting there…. I also run 10k runs for charity and would like to do more. I’m not a slacker or anything, and would use my new found time very wisely. I understand the value of time, more than I do money.

But I am very concerned how my voluntary unemployment would look to my next employer. Would my 3-6 months unemployment look bad on my record and CV when I apply for a new job? Wouldn’t it be a case of "What did you do in that time?" Then I can tell them it was a conscious decision and I did a lot! i.e. writing, volunteering, learning, etc. It’s not like I don’t want to work, I love working and can’t wait to start again, but I have a great opportunity to make some fast progress on my writing and portfolio, build on my self-esteem, and learn new skills with volunteering. Then I have a new change, challenge and job to look forward to. Wouldn’t it be the same as someone going travelling for 6 months and being out of work? But an inwards travelling, and working towards my writing portfolio, whilst doing some part time volunteering?

Has anyone done a similar thing? Or has any comments on this radical decision in such a time where jobs and money are both as scarce as each other? Or should it be a case of "If I can, then I should?" Feel free to email me, if you wish.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

You deserve a medal if you reach to the end of this! :) Thanks.
Thanks Yirmiyah. Yes, I write fiction for illustrated children’s books, scripts for TV, short films and feature films in various genres. I write animation scripts as well, and have some novels set for the future. I just love story-telling. I have a 2:1 degree in Screenwriting, but I know hard work and networking will get me to where I want to go.

Best wishes on becoming a writer. Have you decided what kind of writing (e.g., novels, non-fiction, books, magazines, blogs, etc.)?

How can I make my life better?

By · February 25, 2011 · Filed in Past Life Contracts · 13 Comments »

All my friends and family have deserted me within the past year. My girlfriend of 3 years broke up with me through a text message and moved back with her parents(a few states over). It’s like everyone was hired to be nice to me and then their contract ran out. All I have to live for is my job as a mechanic. So what would you do if you had my life?

1. move on. $hit happens
2. collect yourself, think positive and do something to make me happy.
3. start new. i am sure you learned lessons from the past
4. take a class, try new activity, hobby, make new friends.
5. hit the gym. helps the mood.
6. learn to cook. blast music
7. you’re lucky to have a job in the economy that pays and are independent (right?)
8. never too late to start.
9. make new friends..might lead to new gf after you get over the ex
10. try things that interest you. challenge yourself to a goal

How can I lead a more organized life?

By · February 15, 2011 · Filed in Past Life Contracts · 3 Comments »

Lately, I’ve been surprised by how negligent I’ve been by letting these slip past my mind. Like, I constantly forget about assignments and papers, going to appointments, remembering to catch up with my housing contract with my college… I get so bothered by the fact I forget to these things.

How can I lead a better, more organized life?

I’ve kept planners before and they just don’t work for me, so don’t suggest those.

Make sacrifices, order your priorities.

What is life like for a Navy Nuke? I am a DEPer and will most likely be working on a carrier?

By · February 13, 2011 · Filed in Past Life Contracts · 1 Comment »

I want to know what life will be like on a carrier, I have been to many websites and the answers as to what work schedules are like are quite ambiguous. I’ve heard that on a carrier you have duty from 0700 one day till 1600 or so the next day, while others have said that you have duty for a different amount of time. If I were to be an MM, statistically 50% are MM, so that means that I would wake up, do my duty till the next day then wait another 8 days for duty? Is duty every 5 to 8 days or what? Would I get much liberty, would I get overnight liberty in a port where I could go off the ship and hang out in town or go into the countryside and get some snowboarding in? I’ve heard that Nukes are the first on last off.

I also have a question, I know nukes work way down in the ship, would I be bunking with only other nukes, and also, how many nukes work at a time on a carrier?

I have some college under my belt, about 30 hours, so not too much, but I certainly intend to finish at least one degree while i am in. I have read about Seaman to Admiral, I’ve heard it is pretty hard to be chosen to get into that, and is this a possibility for a Navy Nuke? I would very much like to become an officer one day, and I know that I will have a degree within 4 years, so that means before my Nuke contract is up I will have a B.A. in something. Would I then apply for OTS? I’ve heard that being picked up to be an officer when you are a Nuke is extremely hard, and if you want to go officer you would either have to go in with a degree or find a different rate to become one. I can’t do that, I don’t have the funds left to finish a degree, which is partly why i am joining the navy, but I have also been around the military for the past decade on various bases, so it’s something I know I would love to do.

Also, I’ve read on the paycharts that if you are enlisted and go officer you would be termed an O-1E or 0-2E, but I see that it only goes up to O-3E, what’s after O-3E? Do you just become an O-4E or do you just become an O-4? I intend to make a full career out of this then go civilian and pursue another career there.

I have a fair knowledge of the workings of the navy, as I have been reading any text I can about the service, everything from what boot camp is like to naval history texts.

idk ’bout carriers.

Start with you will be standing "One-in-Three" watches underway, more likely than not, so eight out of every twenty-four hours you will be on watch. In addition, NUCs (a Nuke is a bomb, Nuclear Propulsion Qualified Navy personnel are NUCs) have to do several hours of division, department, ship’s, and general military training each week, have to do assigned Preventative Maintenance, administer their assigned collateral duties, do whatever repairs are needed, keep their watchstations and work areas ship shape, etc….

And when you first arrive you have to QUALIFY, which will dominate your life for at least six months.

If you have inport duty it generally runs from 0730 one day to 0800 the next, and then you have to remain and perform assigned work until your LPO cuts you loose. Expect to pull duty every third or fourth day. Expect one in three watches on duty days to be the best case you will see until you are on the last year of your sea tour.

Forget about snowboarding when hitting an overseas liberty port; When at homeport, sure, but when in a liberty port you have to remain within a certain number of miles of the ship, so if you were to get injured while snowboarding outside of this limit, well the Captain will let you know in no uncertain terms that you messed up.

As far as commissioning programs go, your best bet is to get the gears in motion for admission to USNA or an NROTC scholarship as soon as you finish boot.

Being a NUC is not glamourous. If you love big machines it is the greatest possible job, but it is l-o-o-o-ong days, dirty sweaty, and noisy work. If you are looking for a stepping to a commission it is the best, but it is even better if you skip the stepping stone altogether and go straight to Annapolis, or to NROTC.

And the pay’s real good these days.
