Can someone help me who understands Navy Job Contracts/ Waivers and or the MEPS depth Perception test.?
Let me start off with I am very disappointed, and would like any answer to be written in a way that does not encourage me to commit suicide. In other words, please understand that this is the next 4 years of my life and being negative is only going to further depress me.
Okay, So i dropped out of Penn State, and decided that before I sold my life away to become an industrial engineer I needed to join the Navy.
So I took the asvab and made a 91! HELL YEAH
!
This joy was short lived. Next came the dreaded physical at MEPS. I passed as far as most requirements go. I made 20 / 20 in both eye and was proven to not be near or far sighted. However the depth perception test was harsh. I did not get past the third line, and I was not told what to look for in each circle. I failed, and was disqualified from becoming an AW ( the entire reason I am in the Navy). So me being a female I cried, for like ever. My recruiter took advantage of this moment of weakness and got me to sign into STG ( Sonar Technolgies) This is a horrible job, and I deserve better. How can I have a 91 on the Asvab and only get 3 job options (Hull tech, Construction, or Sonar Tech). Out of everyone who went to MEPS with me, I am the only one with no sign on bonus.. Even my recruiter said I should have been offered one. Anyway he told me if I could pass a civilian randot eye exam that they could wavier it, and get me into AW. Well I did reasonable ( I made an 8 out of 10) on depth perception test today. This is considered a bit above the average of 7. The doctor even wrote a letter saying my eyes were in fine condition, and there should be no problem with me going into aviaiton. I am going to take another depth perception test tommorow for futher reinforcement that I can see just fine. I have 20/20 in both eyes.
Do you think this wavier will be accepted? I am supposed to leave for boot camp on January 21, will I know before then? Any tips on how to do better next time around at MEPS?
Basically do you think im screwed into STG for the next 4 years, and is it uncommon to switch jobs. Is it too late to get out of this mess?
Im swore in, but not into active duty.
Please help
Please be detailed. I have been very depressed about it, and I have noone other than my recruiter (who lies compulsivley) to talk to about this.
Okay, Just so everyone in here knows. The lady who answered 2ndly was exactly who I asked not to respond. I AM NOT SUICIDAL. JUST DOWN ABOUT IT. I HAVE NO EYE PROBELMS, JUST DIDNT KNOW HOW IMPORTANT THE TEST WAS.
And I would just email this to her but she doesnt accept emails…
DIE IN A FIRE!!
I think shes jealous of my asvab score and prolly got stuck in hull tech or something.
First off, please don’t be depressed. You should be very proud of what you’re doing! =] As for the waivers, they CAN be done. I can’t give so much detail, but I see no one else has responded. Bonuses are given to certain jobs, you should look into that, though. Try military.com for help on things you might need to know. Or contact a recruiter over the phone and ask questions since the one you have is a liar. As for changing jobs, some people do. But, you never know, you might like it. Don’t know how it is in the Navy exactly, but when you get to your first station, you can attempt to change your job. I hope someone else answers your question; I tried as best as I could. Good luck to you, though!

not everyone qualifies for all the jobs they want, and physical limitations( depth perception, color blindness) are a factor. your gender is a large factor as well. there plain just aren’t as many slots that are open to females. period. your LINE scores determine what ratings you can get. NOT the overall score.
and the Navy doesn’t grant many waivers, as they do not need to. so if the waiver comes back denied.. either do not ship at all, or stick with STG and make the best of it. how do you know it would suck?! you haven;t even been to Boot Camp yet, you have ZERO basis for your sweeping generalization on the rating. .
which is more important: the rating, or being a Sailor? decide. Threatening suicide is a cop out and a sign of immaturity at best and instability at worst. Serving is a PRIVILEGE, not a right.

You can change rates before you ship, don’t let your recruiter tell you, you can’t. When you were at MEPS you should have asked specifically for more jobs. When I was there they kept throwin all these mechanic jobs at me that I did not want and so I had them get on the phone and force open a spot for me (their words not mine) with a bonus. Even still it wasn’t the job that I really wanted so I bargained. I would sign for the job that he called in for (as a backup plan) and test for the job that I REALLY wanted. I took the test, passed had my recruiter do a DAR and got the job I wanted. Don’t settle for something you don’t want without TRYING first to get what you do want. Of course you can’t always MAKE them give u the job u want because its just not always possible but definantly give it a good try first.
