On a Clear Day You Can See Forever (1970)
When a psychiatrist (Yves Montand) begins talking to a young woman (Barbra Streisand), he realizes that she can recall a past life while under hypnosis. Although this brash New Yorker is thoroughly modern and somewhat abrasive, he becomes fascinated by the 19th-century English woman who speaks through her. This oddball musical flicks back and forth between period flashbacks and modern times, which may be one reason it never builds up much power in either realm. On a Clear Day You Can See Forever failed at the box office in 1970, one of a number of glossy musicals that could not find an audience in the post-Easy Rider movie world. In fact, one of the film’s out-of-place costars is Jack Nicholson, a symbol of the new movies that were making old-fashioned musicals a thing of the past. It didn’t help that Paramount severely cut On a Clear Day before releasing it. For all that, the picture is enjoyable and–at the end–really quite touching. Director Vincente Minnelli (Meet Me in St. Louis), then near the close of a fabulous career, maintains his usual careful eye for color and design, and keeps Streisand relatively restrained–for Streisand, that is. That’s not entirely true. A person can both act a song and sing it to tis fullest. I think I understand what neener84 is trying to get at. I think what he/she is saying is that Barbara over colors her songs. Which is fine! No doubt of that. on record and in film you can get away with that a little more, so it works entirely to her advantage.

Because that’s how she sings – it’s why people love her and her voice. Either you love it or you don’t, but the great thing about Barbra is that she just isn’t a singer she’s a performer – she gets into the songs she’s singing. It’s called acting…and since this is a movie I’d say it’s more than appropriate.

Thanks, again, NovaPlanet for your efforts. Sorry for some of the asinine comments. Youtube seems to bring out all the ding dongs. I still sing this song to my flowers and plants. It’s been 30 some years and I still know the words to every song in this film. My absolute favorite Streisand film. I was surprised to read from the above poster this was her weakest-selling album. ??? What a shame! Some of her best singing!
