553 The Recollection of Past Lives (Section 6.1, Chapter 63 – Yoga Vasistha)

The mendicant’s incarnations. Oddly, he isn’t given a name even though he had the ability to materialise his thoughts. The mendicant is symbolic of the absolute Brahman. He proceeded into conceptualisation and became the tribesman Jivata and then a stream of further incarnations.

The three knowledges of the Buddha. The first knowledge is awareness of past lives. Wherever the attention is, that is what it is identifying with.

Birth is when the notion ‘I’ arises (objective consciousness).

The Rudra-consciousness remembers its past lives.

The mendicant embodied absolute awareness but then it formed a concept and identified with it.

The practice of insight meditation, retracing the path of the attention.
