Why does life and school have to be all about test(s)?
Hello,
I am a sophomore in college this year and I am a nursing major. Through the past several years of my life I have been in school and learning new stuff everyday. All my life I have wanted to become a nurse, but since I’ve been in college, I have been told to take so many test to get into the nursing program in colleges. This bothers me because I have a learning disability and a possible case of ADD. In order for someone to get into the nursing program at my college, you have to have this and this and this. One thing is the committee will most likely accept a person that has a 21 on the ACT. I have taken the ACT 6 times and my highest score has been an 18! I have tried everything! It bothers when I hear someone say that they have a score in the 20-36 range for the ACT. How do they do it? Since when did the test scores matter to people? I just don’t understand. I have trouble with Reading Comprehension. I can’t change that now! Also, it bothers me when I am sitting in class, paying attention, and make anywhere from above average to below average grade on test and quizzes. But, when another student that does not pay attention, sleeps or texts in class, etc. takes a test or quiz, they get a A or a B on it. Why? What is my problem and why is it causing so much pressure on me and lowers my self-esteem and even sometimes get me depressed? Why do colleges even have tests? I have studied the medical field my whole life and I know a lot of things. There are some people in the nursing program now who don’t even know what vital signs are or know how to do CPR. It makes me mad! I may have just a little book smarts, but I am thankful to have some common sense. If people in the work field are demanding for professions in all areas, why won’t they accept everybody who has an interest in what they wanna do? It seems like everything requires tests now. In my opinion, it’s stupid. If you can pass a class and have learned from that class, you should do well in the real world. Why does life and school have to be all about test(s)?
I just had to get this off my chest so I don’t have to be upset anymore. I would love some answers and some opinions. Thanks.
I bet schools would be happy to stop putting so much emphasis on tests and give knowledge the importance you say it deserves.
But how do you propose schools measure knowledge?
The worst year of my life! What can I do!?
I’m going to be completely straight-forward here and tell you exactly why this is the worst year of my life:
The year started great, I got engaged! Since then, bad thing after bad thing keeps on happening and I am really upset and p*d off about it, I’m doing all I can to stop the rot and nothing seems to be working, it is getting worse!
My dad fell down the stairs, due to a bleed on the brain, which sped up the onset of his huntingdons disease, he’s now been laid of work for 3 weeks, may get retired on medical grounds.
I was assaulted by a friend of a "friend", left bleeding from the head, the guy who did it was arrested but released without charge with just a caution for ABH. I had to take 2 weeks off work, then I was made redundant on the day I went back, as the company was going bust. I am still getting over the trauma of the assault.
My fiancee’s dad then had to go to hospital, came out after a few weeks but very sadly passed away 3 days ago.
Also the tenancy contract on my flat is due to expire and the landlady is not renewing it, so as of June 6 we will be homeless. We are both claiming JSA, both looking very hard for work, though the ratio of unemployed people to available jobs in the local area is 10:1 and rising. I’m only 23, my fiancee is only 18, we are both stuck in this situation. I am also under debt management for £10,000 and even finding this a struggle. Even petty things are now getting to us as we are so annoyed that this year is getting worse and worse by the minute. Any advice on how we can stop the rot?
You have a loving fiancee, your father is still with you, and the friend spent a night in jail that he more than likely will never forget. Give it time, and all will work itself out. I know that doesn’t help much for the short term, but right now is a hard time for nearly everyone, especially in the 18-25 range.
We all will get through it, and until then, count your blessings, as some have even fewer than yourself.

Mormon Doctrine: Finding Faith in Jesus Christ – Part 2 of 3
"The fundamental principles of our religion are the testimony of the Apostles and Prophets, concerning Jesus Christ, that He died, was buried, and rose again the third day, and ascended into heaven; and all other things which pertain to our religion are only appendages to it." – Joseph Smith
Heaven was His throne and earth His footstool (Acts 7:49)—and yet at Bethlehem there was no room for Him—no crib for His bed.
He was the architect of the world and yet stated that the "Son of Man hath not where to lay his head." (Matthew 8:20)
He was a God and commanded the waters and the landâyet on Calgary begged for a cool refresh of water and was given bitter vinegar "mixed with gall" instead. (Matthew 27:34)
He who healed the ten lepers asked the returning one, "where are the nine?" (Luke 17:17)
He taught eternal truths in His own home town and they responded "Is not this Joseph's son?" They grew so offended they took Him up on a hill to "cast him down headlong." (Luke 4)
To those of His …
